The Rainbow in the Seventh-day Adventist Church: The Nuances of Queer Identity and Activism in a Second Great Awakening Denomination

In this first CLGS Lavender Lunch of 2025 Chris Ngugi (he/him), a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, shares with us his ministry with The Rainbow in the Room, a space for community members and professional presenters to gather and discuss what it means to care for our LGBTQ+ neighbors in an informed way while respecting cultural, religious, and political differences—all within the context of a Christian denomination which is non-LGBTQ affirming.

Our Speaker

Chris Ngugi

Chris Ngugi is in his final year of undergraduate studies at Andrews University (a Seventh-Day Adventist university in Berrien Springs, Michigan), and he is studying pre-law with a double major in Pre-Professional Psychology & Spanish Language, Literature, and Culture.  He is also an undergraduate research scholar whose passion project is a qualitative study of the religiosity and LGBTQ+ identity of emerging adults across Seventh-day Adventist colleges and universities.

Above all, he desires to serve God and others, with all the nuance that means for him and others in his community.
