There are several ways to make a charitable gift to CLGS. Some people have set up named endowment funds that support the work of the Center. Others have asked that contributions to the Center be made in their name to celebrate an ordination, birthday, or other significant life event. Because of tax provisions that encourage charitable giving, there are many other ways of giving that you might not have thought of before—ways that allow you to make a larger gift than you had thought possible, or make a gift with assets that you might not have realized were available to you. The best way to ensure the sustainability of the Center’s work is by making a planned gift.

Please know, however, that every gift, no matter how large or small, will support the vitally important efforts CLGS undertakes every day to advance the well-being of LGBT people.

Planned Giving

Securing the future and ensuring the sustainability of CLGS and its important work can be done through planned giving. Regardless of age, making gifts to CLGS is possible through the establishment of bequests and trusts. Not only can these arrangements provide income to the donor, but they also can provide significant tax advantages. Most importantly, this type of gift will leave an enduring legacy in the work CLGS undertakes to advance the well-being of LGBT people. There are many forms of planned gifts, and each option has different tax advantages for the donor. Please contact us with any questions you may have about this kind of giving.

Bequests

To make a gift to CLGS from your estate, you should make out a new will or add a codicil to your existing will. In order to make sure that your exact wishes are carried out, you should consult with an attorney before creating or amending your will. CLGS has resources available to help answer your questions about this kind of giving.

Gifts that Return Income

Life income gifts enable gifts to CLGS through a trust or annuity, while securing a stream of income back to the donor from that same trust or annuity. A trustee (which can be CLGS or an entity of your choice) manages the investment of the trust assets and will distribute income to you for a term measured by a specific number of years (not to exceed 20 years), or the lives of the beneficiaries. Thereafter, the remaining trust principal goes to CLGS, and its use can be designated to the area of your choice.

Both bequests and trusts or annuities are often designated to specific endowment funds, which can be created in the name of the donor or another designation of the donor’s choosing.

Named Endowment Funds

Several generous donors have established named funds within the CLGS Endowment. Some of these funds are unrestricted gifts while others are devoted to specific programming initiatives or particular areas of concern. A named fund in the CLGS Endowment is a wonderful way to ensure a donor’s legacy in the vitally important work of advancing the well-being of LGBT people, transforming faith communities, and shaping a new public discourse on religion and sexuality. Donors may also choose to contribute to any of the already established endowment funds. For more information on these named funds, please contact us today: 510-849-8206 or (toll-free) 1-800-999-0528.
