CLGS’ advocacy work is invested in challenging exclusionary policies of religious institutions, promoting sound reliable religious education on LGBTQ issues, partnering with activists networks on national and local campaigns at the intersection of faith, sexuality & gender identity, and organizing LGBTQ and allied people of faith on responding to important issues effecting LGBTQ communities.

Current Projects/Campaigns:

Liberating Religious Liberty Campaign: CLGS is partnering with national organizations to address the ways in which the concept of religious liberty is being used to further discrimination in recent Religious Freedom Restoration Act  policy battles. We are working to develop and amplify an accurate and theologically based perspective of what religious liberty is and how it should be used, including the case for why religious liberty should not be used as a license to discriminate.

Transgender Anti-Discrimination Advocacy Resources: CLGS is proud to work in partnership with statewide and national organizations to promote respect, understanding and safety for the transgender and gender nonconforming community, and to oppose discrimination of all kinds. This work includes mobilizing and amplifying transgender voices of faith in the Transform California Campaign and the efforts to appeal North Carolina’s HB-2 bill that targets transgender people.

Previous Advocacy Campaigns Include:

LGBTQ Refugee Support Project: CLGS has partnered with local bay area congregations and community organizations  to develop a congregation-based support system for LGBTQ refugees and asylees in the Bay Area.

Ending Conversion Therapy Campaign: CLGS  partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) #BornPerfect Campaign on the role of progressive faith communities in dismantling the harmful practices of conversion therapy, these practices have long been debunked by mental health professionals as both ineffective and damaging.
