This CLGS Lavender Lunch workshop delved into Dr. Eric Hess’ qualitative research on the experiences of Queer current and former students navigating fundamentalist Christian educational institutions.
Dr. Hess’ analysis focuses, in particular, on the varying degrees of hidden and overt allyship and hostility that Queer people in fundamentalist Christian higher educational institutions experience with regard to peers, teachers, administrators, and clergy, thus revealing both barriers and breakthroughs to acceptance.
Through poignant narratives, Dr. Hess includes stories of hope, humor, resilience, and profound challenge.
In addition, this CLGS Lavender Lunch workshop emphasized the transformative impact of intentionally-supportive people – and offered practical insights for those navigating politics, faith, and identity in the fundamentalist church.
Dr. Eric Hess (he/him) is a gender and sexuality researcher, professor, and practitioner whose work examines the intersection of fundamentalist Christian institutions, queer identities, and allyship. A critical Methodist, Eric envisions an inclusive church rooted in radical reconciliation, inspired by the aspirational words from Charles Wesley’s ascension hymn, “Blessings on [God’s] church below, Alleluia!”
