CETLALIC: Centro Tlahuica de Lenguas e Intercambio Cultural
January 7-21, 2017 [Note: new dates]
CLGS will again partner with CETLALIC, a language school with deep, progressive roots and a passion for liberating pedagogy, for a two-week immersion in language study for ministry and in engaging liberation theologians, base communities, women’s groups, LGBTQ communities, and social justice advocates. This immersion will be offered through partnership with Glide Memorial United Methodist Church.
The program includes daily Spanish language lessons, opportunities for formal and information conversations, educational programs about Mexican history, art and culture, and home stays with LGBTQ affirming families. The group will explore communities of liberation in modern Mexico, focusing on the LGBTQ and women’s communities and on issues of economic justice within Mexico and between Mexico and the United States. Students will develop their knowledge of written, spoken and read Spanish through language classes and immersive living experience with native Spanish speakers. The program will include multiple field trips to sites of cultural and artistic importance as well as attending the LGBT Pride celebration in Cuernavaca, lectures on related topics, and dialogue with community members. Some knowledge of Spanish is suggested but not required; the program offers skilled, patient instruction in groups of no more than 5 at multiple levels.
Cuernavaca is in the central Mexican state of Moreles, south of Mexico City. Known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” the climate is temperate and the sights are quite beautiful.
You can view the detailed itinerary here (subject to minor changes) of the 2016 program.
The total cost of the trip is $1400 (via check) and $1425 (via PayPal). This includes room & board, meals, instruction, field trips, textbook, and the 2-weeks of programming. Checks can be mailed to CLGS, 1798 Scenic Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709 USA.
Please select a flight that arrives at the Mexico City airport no later than 5:30 pm on Saturday, January 7. Trip insurance is highly recommended and is usually available through your air carrier.
