The Future Church for LGBTQ+ People and Their Allies with Benjamin Brenkert

In this Lavender Lunch, Benjamin Brenkert reflects on the future church for LGBTQ+ People and their allies.  As a former Jesuit, he proposes drawing upon the spirituality of Saint Ignatius of Loyola as a way for people of faith to discern membership in churches that thwart their personal and group flourishing.  Benjamin will also speak about his recently-published book, A Catechism of the Heart: A Jesuit Missioned to the Laity  (Wipf and Stock, 2020), a memoir and primer on vocation, discernment, and changing one’s way of life for the greater glory of God.

The Interfaith Queery with Tahil Sharma

In this CLGS Lavender Lunch, Tahil Sharma presents on the intersection of faith and spirituality and the intersection of gender and sexuality while also discussing histories of trauma and the importance of inclusion.  The presentation also includes an exploration of the ways that the current interfaith movement makes it possible for religious and interfaith spaces to be intersectional and relevant for achieving accountability and equity.

Out in the Pulpit: The Lived Experience of Lesbian Clergy in Four Protestant Mainline Denominations with Pamela Pater-Ennis

In this CLGS Lavender Lunch, Dr. Pamela Pater-Ennis discusses her 2019 book Out in the Pulpit: The Lived Experiences of Lesbian Clergy in Four Protestant Mainline Denomination, which grew out of a dissertation project that included interviews with thirteen lesbian clergy  members.  These women were interviewed about their early own religious histories, their journeys of rejection from their churches, and their ministries as ordained clergy in one of the following four mainline denominations: The Reformed Church in America; the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; the Presbyterian Church USA; and the United Church of Christ.

Love Is My Sanctuary with Unoma Azuah

In this CLGS Lavender Lunch Unoma Azuah explores a variety of themes related to her experiences as an African, lesbian immigrant to the United States.  She will also share excerpts from her recently-published memoir, Embracing My Shadow: Growing up Lesbian in Nigeria, and discuss some of the challenges that she encountered as a lesbian coming of age in Nigeria.  In all of her work, Azuah reveals a deep personal awareness of love as her sanctuary, and she bears witness in all of her work to an understanding of love that has contributed to her own journey to self-acceptance.
