Dear Friends of CLGS:

john-mcneill1I write to let you know that John McNeill, Jesuit priest, author of The Church and the Homosexual (and many other notable books), social justice activist, psychologist, and scholar of religion entered hospice Saturday, September 19, 2015 in Florida.  Please pray for John and his husband, Charlie, during this time; his church community is holding them both in prayer.

John and Charlie have been good friends and faithful supporters of CLGS since our founding in 2000.  In fact, the first collection in the CLGS Archives is the John J. McNeill and Charles Chiarelli Gay and Lesbian Liberation Collection.  We are honored to house this important collection of religious and LGBTQ history and theology.

Below is one of John’s favorite prayers, The Memorare by Saint Bernard.  I include it below as I hold John and Charlie in prayer:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Warmly,
Bernie
